About the Position

The ideal candidate will share Madera Community College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2023-2024 academic year, we enrolled over 10,000 students in which 68% identify as Latinx, 8% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% as Black/African American, 17% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial. Madera Community College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a college dedicated to the students it serves.

General Purpose

Under policy direction of the College President, serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet; plans, organizes, directs and integrates operations of the Institutional Research and Planning Office, Office of Equity and Student Success and Categoricals. Provides leader­ship for the advancement of effective instructional programming including program development, and Guided Pathways; manages and evaluates short- and long-term planning to advance student access, equity and success for a diverse student body; provides expert professional assist­ance to the College President and other District/college management in areas of assigned responsibility; manages assigned functional areas to ensure compli­ance with District/college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations and require­ments; and performs related duties as assigned.

 


Minimum and Desirable Qualifications

Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices. 

Education and Experience

  • An earned master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study; and 
  • Seven (7) years of increasingly years of increasingly responsible experience as an academic administrator or in a faculty leadership role, at least two years of which years were in a management capacity, preferably in a California community college.

Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements

  • A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program.

  • Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity; recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes; willingness to examine and remediate one’s relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students; and a commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and team approach to management.

Demonstrates the ability to distinguish when each approach is appropriate.
Effective Organizational Leadership Knowledge and evidence of leadership experience in higher education with a demonstrated understanding of efficient and streamlined processes and procedures in fostering an ethos that normalizes anti-racism and equity for racially minoritized students. Demonstrated skills and experience to lead in assigned areas and understands the importance of the Vice President Student Services role the college. Engages in a creative, innovative, and collaborative manner with all constituent groups. Accesses and assimilates information and uses quantitative and qualitative data for decision-making, planning, mobilizing resources, and motivating individuals to creatively overcome challenges facing the District and to make continuous improvements in operations, programming, procedures, and services.
Passion to Lead in Difficult Times Provide visionary and strategic leadership and guidance as the College adjusts to changing landscapes with a focus on advancing and maintaining quality educational and student support services. Has the resilience and perseverance to address challenges and confrontations. Is deliberate in assessing diverse and conflicting perspectives; brings those perspectives to consensus and successful outcomes. Is an effective, data-informed decision maker and transformational leader of change and will commit to making changes based on data. Is action and results oriented, innovative, and creative, and responds to situations in a timely manner.

Effective Leadership in Complex Educational Environment Understands the Vice President’s role in planning, budgeting, assessing, and leading continuous improvement within the authority structure of the College. Demonstrated experience and skills to effectively manage integrated student support services and all resources to advance the purposes of the College. Engages in a creative, innovative, and respectful manner with all stakeholders. Knowledge of California and federal polices, laws and regulations governing community colleges and accreditation expectations. Stays abreast of best practices and current trends in student services frameworks and models. Engages and supports professional development for their team.
Communication Skills Communicates effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies while using interpersonal skills including tact, patience, and diplomacy.
Advocacy Skills Is an advocate for student support programs and services and their role in contributing to student success. Knowledge and understanding of the Student-Centered Funding Formula and seeks opportunities to expand funding and staffing. Develops relationships with colleagues statewide.
