MCC Scholarship Application

The MCC Scholarship Program

The Madera Community College Scholarship Program has helped students attending Madera Community College and Madera Community College in Oakhurst achieve their educational goals. Scholarships are a financial resource provided by local businesses, community groups, alumni, and a variety of private sources. Scholarships are limited funds and awarded on a competitive and/or special criteria basis, such as grade point average or academic major. Our donors designate specific criteria based on academic achievement, educational and career goals, and financial need. Awards range from $250 to $1,500 per year.

Students need to complete the general Madera Community College online scholarship application to be considered for any of our Institutional scholarships. However, some donors may require additional documents and/or interviews/auditions from their applicants.

Scholarship Notification - Applications are reviewed April - July. Students who are selected will be sent an email to their school email address in August. Recipients will be advised of the terms of the 2026-2027 scholarship award, how it is disbursed during the school year and the need to maintain GPA requirements and enrollment status during the year the scholarship is received. Scholarship awards will be presented at an annual awards ceremony that will be held in September. Recipients are required to attend the awards ceremony.

Animals are complex creatures who exist alongside the ever-increasing demands of human societal and cultural systems. As such they exhibit certain behaviors, adapt to the environment in various ways, and frequently require human assistance for their survival after thousands of years of human encroachment on their territory. The need to understand their behavior, assist in their survival, and predict their needs increases yearly. This necessitates more and better knowledge of the differing needs of animal and human needs. This scholarship will, hopefully, provide mentoring from SCCCD faculty to help a student obtain a career that would involve animal research. Eligible candidates must complete the Dr. Fred Skydog Emerling Zoology Scholarship Essay, maintain a minimum 3.1 GPA, be pursuing a biology major and enrolled full time (12+ units).

This scholarship was established by Dr. Fred Skydog Emerling who graduated from a community college and worked at Fresno City College from 1984-2013 as a counselor. Skydog's love of animals is palpable in that he visited over 230 zoos/aquariums/animal exhibits, travelled to over 84 countries and all 7 continents, looking for animals in every setting. This included seeing penguins in the Antarctic, puffins in Iceland, bison in Yellowstone, encountering great white sharks from a cage in South Africa, communing with lemurs in Madagascar, and stalking gorillas in Uganda plus finding rattlesnakes and scorpions in Arizona, where he retired. He travels to see animals.  While working as a counselor at Fresno City College for 29 and 1/2 fabulous years, he developed a great love for students in SCCCD and wanted to find a way to give back. Although his Ph.D. is in school psychology, animals are a passion of his. This passion has been passed on to his children, one of who got his Ph.D. in evolutionary biology and teaches biology in the SCCCD.

Its purpose is to financially support deserving students who wish to pursue careers in career technical industries. This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Terry Kershaw, who served SCCCD for 36 years as an instructor at Reedley College and as an administrator in a variety of capacities at the campus and district levels. The last 12 years of his career were dedicated to the growth and development of the SCCCD-North Centers (Clovis, Madera, Oakhurst) as Dean of Instruction/Vice President, advancing to Vice Chancellor, and finally to the first campus president of the Willow International Center, prior to his retirement in 2012. VFW Sierra Nisei Post 8499 Scholarship

This VFW Post was established in 1953 by the World War II Nisei (2nd generation Japanese-American) veterans who served in the Military Intelligence Service, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the 100th Battalion.

During WWII, the US Government forcibly relocated and incarcerated people of Japanese Ancestry from the western Pacific states (citizens and non-citizens) without legal charges or trials and deprived them of their civil liberties as written in the US Constitution. Over 30,000 Nisei (2nd generation Japanese Americans) served in the US military while their families were held under military guard at barbed-wire concentration camps in isolated areas of the country. These Nisei soldiers formed segregated Japanese American US military units of the Military Intelligence Service 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the 100th Battalion. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team is noted to be the most decorated unit in American history for its size and length of service, receiving 7 Presidential Unit citations, 21 Medals of Honor, 29 Distinguished Service Crosses, 560 Silver Stars, 4,00 Bronze Stars, and more than 4,500 Purple Hearts. At the end of WWII, after the US declared victory, President Harry Truman presented the 442nd Regimental Combat Team with its 7th Presidential Unit Citation on the White House lawn and stated, "You have fought not only the enemy, but prejudice, and you have won."
