The Academic Success Center at Madera Community Colleges is hiring! We want to find tutors to help in many different MCC courses, as well as Front Desk employees who will handle administrative duties and act as an important point of contact for tutees.
If you are interested in becoming a tutor, fill out our application now. You will also need an instructor in the discipline you’d like to tutor to fill out our Academic Reference Form.
If you are interested in becoming a Front Desk employee, please fill out our Front Desk employee application..
All applicants must be enrolled in at least six (6) units for the semester in which they would like to work. Applicants will need to submit a copy of their resume, unofficial transcript, current or projected class schedule, and their projected availability. Additionally, students applying to the Reading and Writing Center will need to submit a writing sample of 4-5 pages.
Under the supervision of the Academic Success Center coordinators, a tutor provides one-on-one and/or group tutoring in assigned subject areas. In addition, tutors attend training workshops and register for a tutor training course. Tutors guide, coach, encourage, and model how successful students excel in college by providing academic assistance and promoting independence in learning. Independence in learning is fostered in a tutoring environment by engaging students with effective questions. The types and quality of questions tutors ask, therefore, are more important than the answers they give.
ASC is comprised of three different services. The Reading and Writing Center helps students with reading and written assignments from many disciplines and the STEM Center focuses primarily on helping students in numerous science and math courses, while the Learning Center is where our Extending the Classroom (ETC) tutors work with students in specific courses ranging from accounting to psychology.
Front Desk employees are often the first people that students and visitors see when they enter the Academic Success Center. As a Front Desk employee, your job duties are primarily communication-based. As such, you'll need to be familiar with proper phone and email etiquette and possess strong interpersonal skills. Your daily tasks may include keeping records, scheduling appointments, and facilitating communication between teachers, staff, and students. In some cases, you may be required to provide secretarial support in addition to reception duties.
Front Desk employees start by earning the current California minimum wage of $15.50 per hour. All new tutor hires start at $16.00 per hour. Student employees can work a maximum of 19 hours per week
