Recognizing Pride Month

Jun 11, 2021

Pride flag being raisedMadera Community College was founded on the values of equity and inclusion. Our diversity is our greatest strength. One special way to demonstrate our continued commitment to equity and inclusion is by recognizing Pride Month.

Pride Month is celebrated in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots, which have been lauded as the birth of the modern LGBTQ+ movement. While we set apart this special time to celebrate, honor and affirm our LGBTQ+ community members, we know this is part of our mission all year long.

At the June 1 Board of Trustees meeting, the board adopted a resolution entitled Recognition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ (LGBTQ+) Pride Month, June 2021. Please take time to read and reflect. Pride Month reminds us of our responsibility to continue our advocacy work against marginalization, discrimination and hatred.

To those of us considered allies, I encourage you to spend time this month learning, listening, and dialoguing. This is an ongoing journey, and we need to continue to advocate for inclusivity and kindness. To the LGBTQ+ members in our community, we stand with you.

Our work at Madera Community College is layered and complex. Ensuring a healthy, safe and welcoming environment for ALL is central to everything we do. Thank you for your continued commitment to our community.
